Privacy policy

CheckIfSiteDown is built to collect as little as possible. You don't need an account, we don't run advertising trackers, and we never sell personal information.

Who we are

CheckIfSiteDown (checkifsitedown.com) is a free tool for checking whether websites are online, operated from South Africa. For any privacy question or request, email hello@checkifsitedown.com.

What we collect, and why

Websites you check

When you run a check we store the address you entered, the result (up or down, status code, response time) and the time of the check. We use this to show results, to share one result when many people check the same site at once, and to power the public Recently checked websites list.

That list shows only the domain name (for example example.com), its status and when it was checked. It never shows the full address you typed or who checked it. Because domain names can appear publicly, please don't check private, internal or secret links.

Your IP address

To prevent abuse we record your IP address with the time of each check, and use it only to enforce our fair-use limit. These records are deleted automatically, normally within one hour. Like almost every website, our hosting provider also keeps standard server logs (IP address, pages requested, browser type) for security and troubleshooting, for a limited period.

Messages you send us

If you use the contact form or email us, we receive your name, email address and message. We use them only to reply and to handle your request, and we keep them only as long as needed for that.

Partner (affiliate) links

Some guides include links to recommended services, such as VPN providers. These links pass through our own /go/ address so we can count how many times each partner is clicked, as a daily total with no personal information. When you arrive at the partner's site, that partner may use cookies to record that you came from us, under its own privacy policy.

Cookies

The website checker doesn't set cookies. The contact page uses one strictly necessary session cookie to protect the form against spam; it is deleted when you close your browser.

Advertising

We show ads provided by Google AdSense to keep this service free. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings, and learn more at How Google uses information from sites that use its services. Where the law requires it, we ask for your consent before personalised ads are shown.

Services we rely on

  • Hosting — our website runs on servers provided by Hostinger, which processes data on our behalf.
  • Fonts — our typeface is loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to Google's servers, which can see your IP address. See Google's privacy policy.
  • Email — contact-form messages are delivered through our hosting provider's email service.

When you check a website, our server — not your browser — contacts that website. The website you check sees our server's address, not yours.

How long we keep data

  • Check results: the most recent result for each domain is kept, and replaced each time that domain is checked again.
  • Abuse-prevention records (IP address and time): normally deleted within one hour.
  • Messages: only as long as needed to deal with your request.

Your rights

Depending on where you live — including under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the EU/UK GDPR — you can ask to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, or object to how we use it. Email hello@checkifsitedown.com and we'll respond within 30 days. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority; in South Africa, that is the Information Regulator.

Children

CheckIfSiteDown is a general-audience tool and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be highlighted on the site.
