Terms of use

By using CheckIfSiteDown you agree to these terms. They're short and written in plain language — please read them.

1. The service

CheckIfSiteDown lets you check whether a public website is responding. When you submit an address, our server makes a request to that website and reports what it found. The service is free and may change, be interrupted or be discontinued at any time.

2. Results are information only

Each result reflects what our server observed at one moment, from one location. A website can behave differently for different visitors, networks and regions, and some websites restrict automated requests. We work to make results accurate but don't guarantee that they are complete, accurate or current, and you shouldn't rely on them as the sole basis for important decisions.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the service to attack, overload, probe or scan websites or networks, or to try to reach private or internal systems;
  • send automated or bulk requests, scrape the site, or use our checking service (/api/) from your own software without our written permission;
  • get around the fair-use limit or any other security measure;
  • submit addresses containing illegal, abusive or other people's private information;
  • use the service in any way that breaks the law.

We may block access for anyone who breaks these rules.

4. Public list of checked websites

Domain names you check, with their status and the time of the check, may appear publicly in our Recently checked websites list. Don't check addresses you want to keep private. We may remove entries from the list at our discretion.

5. Content and trademarks

The CheckIfSiteDown name, logo, design and written content belong to us. Website names that appear in results belong to their owners; showing them doesn't imply any connection with or endorsement by those owners.

6. Links to other websites

Our guides may link to other websites. We're not responsible for their content or practices.

6a. Affiliate links and advertising

Some of our guides recommend products, such as VPN services, using affiliate links. If you buy through one of these links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Pages that contain affiliate links say so. Commissions never influence our website status results, and we only recommend services we believe are reputable. Any purchase is an agreement between you and that provider, on their terms. We may also show advertising, which is clearly separate from our results.

7. No warranty

The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we're not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for any loss arising from your reliance on a result, an interruption of the service, or the content of websites you check. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, including your rights under the Consumer Protection Act, where it applies.

9. Privacy

Our privacy policy explains what information we collect and how we use it.

10. Changes and governing law

We may update these terms; the date at the top shows the latest version, and continuing to use the service means you accept the update. These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa.
